Victorian Homes Perfect for Room Dividing Shutters in West Hampstead

Another classic project here illustrated is this West Hampstead installation. This customer was looking for a local company in London who were not only trustworthy but also came recommended as quality craftspeople. With a wealth of famous residents living in West Hampstead we had to work quickly and discreetly in this property which was Victorian if memory serves. With an older property there will often be original features and elements which require either working around or complimenting with our design choices for the windows and doors. In this particular instance the room to be divided by shutters was set with polished antique pine floorboards (which we love of course!) and a classic Victorian clothes cupboard at around 4/5 room height which are also seen around West Hampstead and other London properties built in Victorian times.

The shutters were designed to work with both of these features, including having a dividing rail which was at very near the top of the room dividing shutters rather than at the bottom or middle which is far more common. This allowed the design of the existing house features to be carried over using clear linear movements from cupboard, to shutter to floor and we feel that it works very well!

The customer operates the room dividing shutters by pulling open the central panels or by twisting the wooden slats to allow light but leave the panels closed.

This project with London Shutters completed in Fulham presented a great challenge. We’re often asked if our shutters will work on doors, and I think you will agree that this photo shows that yes they do indeed! With a really tight space to work in this Fulham flat, London Shutters had to come up with an innovative and practical solution for this customer who wanted two rooms divided with shutter panels acting as room dividers.

No problem for us as we love working in Fulham there are loads of great restaurants and we know and visit the Fulham DIY store often when we are in the neighbourhood. Visit them on Fulham local site. So shutters for doors can look exceptional as seen here. With four panels for a non fussy yet modern appeal, we hung these shutter panels with light and space being the main drivers. Using classic white appeal as the colour for this installation (it’s the most popular colour by far!) we split the shutters with a middle rail to provide a visual break, with light being controlled top and bottom as the customer chose. Leaving all of the slats at the bottom closed gives an excellent way of controlling light and what can be seen in and out of the rooms. A simple small twist of the slats and the dynamic between the rooms changes instantly in this Fulham home.

Other rooms in the property had plantation shutters installed in the classic way which is on windows rather than doors! But we didn’t mind this project at all and thoroughly enjoyed being back in this vibrant part of London. We do venture into greater London here at London Shutters and this Woking customer was very pleased that we do, as their second floor loft extension shows with brand new window shutters providing a subtle change from the run of the mill window coverings. Surrey has some incredible houses and homes, and Woking is no different as exemplified here. With quite a large local population coming from Italy you can imagine how popular our products are here as it’s in the blood for Mediterranean homeowners to use shutters rather than curtains.

You can clearly see the appeal here for this bedroom window, as by using double hung shutter panels this home owner can now leave the lower panels closed (in this instance with the slats open) and the top panels folded back to the wall exposing the outside space. This allows the maximum amount of light to fall into the room, coupled with a great deal of privacy as the lower panels are hard to look through.

Semi circular shutters in London Battersea

This installation which was carried out in Battersea a couple of years ago is a great example of how London Shutters can tailor custom designed window shutters to fit most (we say most but we’d really like to say ‘all’, perhaps a little risky) windows, however awkward or oddly shaped they are.
